The Vision
Bonsai Directory was born out of a personal passion for the art of bonsai. While the global bonsai community is vast, spanning hobbyists, professional artists, and nursery owners; the digital landscape supporting it was fragmented. Enthusiasts often struggled to find reliable local resources, discover workshops, or connect with nearby clubs.
The goal was to create the definitive global directory: a beautifully curated, centralized hub connecting the entire bonsai ecosystem in one place.
Identifying the Gap
Before writing a single line of code, extensive market research was conducted to identify gaps in the current market. The research revealed that while there were isolated forums and regional lists, there was no modern, comprehensive platform that aggregated nurseries, clubs, artists, and educational resources globally.
This insight validated the need for a unified platform that could serve everyone from a beginner looking for their first Juniperus procumbens to a seasoned collector seeking a masterclass with a renowned artist.
The Approach: An AI-Driven Build
This project served a dual purpose: building a valuable community resource and serving as a testing ground for an entirely AI-assisted workflow. From the initial conceptualisation and UX/UI design to the full-stack development, AI was utilised as a collaborative partner to accelerate the build process.
This approach presented a unique challenge: learning and implementing new software architectures and coding languages on the fly. By leveraging AI to navigate these technical hurdles, the focus remained on crafting a seamless user experience and a robust, scalable directory structure.
